Donations and the Economy

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

The financial times recently published an article on fundraising in challenging financial times.  The article centered around higher education fundraising and used statistics from our last economic downturn in 2001.  One of the points in the article is that many veteran fundraisers believed that their larger six figure gifts from donors whom they had been cultivating for a while would still be realized.  However, it was believed that the smaller annual fund gifts, typically those that would fall in the leadership level annual giving category of $1,000 would be the most likely range to take a financial hit during our current market.  These are the gifts that are contributed by more recent graduates and younger donors so those that do not have as much expendable income.

It is believed that the types of organizations that will see the smallest amount of decrease in funding are higher education institutions and religious organizations.

I’ve been wondering what the opinions of our users are?  What do you think the coming year has in store for fundraising?
